Press Release for GardenWalk Cleveland 2017

The 2017 GardenWalk Cleveland Tours will take place July 8th and July 9th from 10 am to 5 pm.

GardenWalk Cleveland is back! GardenWalk Cleveland is a free, self- guided tour of more than 200 private gardens in four neighborhoods throughout the city of Cleveland. This year we will be touring gardens in Collinwood, Slavic Village, Detroit-Shoreway and West Park. There are no tickets necessary for the tour. Each neighborhood will have a designated headquarters where visitors can find garden maps, restrooms, and water.

The mission of GardenWalk is to build community, beautify neighborhoods, and encourage civic pride.  This once-a-year garden tour is organized by volunteers from the community.  All of its proceeds go to supporting the work of GardenWalk Cleveland.GardenWalk Cleveland is made possible due to the generous sponsorship of organizations and individuals committed to connecting people with each other, with nature and the beautification of Cleveland. Visitors can tour at their own pace and will get a unique opportunity to meet people and enjoy a huge variety of gardens and farms in our city’s neighborhoods.

This year there will be a special focus on native plants that promote regional diversity, attract wildlife and pollinators, thrive under natural conditions, and connect people to nature in their own back yards.

Here are a few quotes from visitors to GardenWalk from previous years:

“We toured the Detroit-Shoreway and some of the Tremont gardens. Wonderful experience and lots of friendly people. We drove in from Michigan and Sandusky to attend and would do it again. Excellent way to get to know the neighborhoods better and will certainly result in additional trips to frequent local businesses. Outstanding job!

“I was so impressed with the gardens I saw and the friendliness of the people. There were plants that I had never seen before, creative ways to garden in small spaces and one of the gardeners even gave me a gutting of one of her plants. I can’t wait for next year.

Started in 2011 by Jan Kious with Bobbi Reichtell and each year since then, along with a group of volunteers plan a weekend to showcase the beauty of Cleveland’s gardens that include private home flower gardens, community gardens, urban farms, vineyards and orchards.

GardenWalk Cleveland strives to be known as an enjoyable and welcoming garden experience. Last year, GardenWalk had over 1,000 visitors during the 2 day event.
